Remembering The Big Man, Clarence Clemons

June 18, 2011

The world just lost a piece of its soul tonite. Clarence Clemons has been an inspiration, a hero, a touchstone, and a non-stop deliverer of the big sound, big love, and big joy to me and all of my closest friends. It's hard to think of this world without him.

I rarely cry. But I'm crying tonite. From the first minute we heard him on vinyl - and throughout every night we saw him walk onto that stage - everyone who loved Clarence knew we had the biggest, baddest, best man at our side.

The lifelong thrill of loving Bruce & Clarence & The E Street Band might be what it feels like to be addicted to comics and Superheroes. We're dedicated to getting together with people of like-minds and like-souls -- all of us looking up to the image of the friendships we want - experiencing the ultimate teamwork we know is possible - and the hardest part about tonite is figuring out how to handle the loss of the image of permanence we felt every time that man took the stage.

I have been Clarence's fan and friend for almost 40 years. His death is a tremendous loss to all of my best friends and to everyone who loves his sound and his gracious soul. Let's send love to Clarence, to his big family and friends, and to Bruce and the entire E Street Family.

Thoughts of the Week

As an avid fan of Super Bowl Champions the Green Bay Packers, I've spent much of the last week celebrating by shoveling as many different kinds of cheese down my throat as possible. True, this is how I mostly go about life to begin with, but the cholesterol choking off my arteries and slowly murdering me has been especially festive as of late.

But not everyone was pleased with what went down on their TVs last Sunday. Steelers fans, sure. But music fans also suffered a devastating one-two punch in the forms of Christina Aguilera's freedom-hating National Anthem flub, and the Black Eyed Peas' over-aggressive imperative to "DRANK!" And then there are those weirdoes who only watch the Super Bowl "for the ads." And for these folks there was nothing more controversial and upsetting than Groupon's "save your money"-themed ads skewering celeb activism.

Okay, fair enough. A drunken, sports-obsessed viewing audience and a perhaps too-subtle bit of Swiftian satire do not the perfect marriage make. But if you're looking to be shocked, angered, and perplexed by advertising, these videos remain the gold standard...

First, we have this cute lil' nightmare factory from famed Japanese artist Takashi Murakami.

What is Inochi-Kun? My best guess is ceaseless, unending horror. Don't even think about mushrooms while you watch this, or your eyeballs will start to bleed and white foam will start to come out of your nose.

And then there's this gem, from a pre-Muppets Jim Henson, shilling for the now-defunct Wilkins Coffee.

Why is this lumpy little proto-Kermit being such a dick about coffee? What is his agenda? Frankly, I don't like being strong-armed into drinking dirty water. No wonder the Wilkins Company's mafia tactics drove them out of business.

But if you're looking for puppets, why not check out the frightening-yet-friendly beasties of Spook House Dave!?

In this episode, the monsters try to cope with Dave's absence while he's away at summer camp. Suffice to say, they don't exactly hold it together. Maybe they just need to get out of the castle. I hear Groupon has some great deals on hot air balloon rides.

The Saints Came Marching In

Mardi Gras is here (Jan 30 - Feb 16) and The Saints won the Super Bowl.  Mitch Landrieu is the mayor of New Orleans and all seems right in the world.

To celebrate, My Damn Channel threw a Mardi Gras party that was inevitably crashed by our own Grace Helbig and Dave Ahdoot (and ended up being WAY more fun than we intended).  Look out for an all new Grace Crashers - presented by Southern Comfort - coming soon!

That's not all - we were paid a surprise visit by two very special My Damn Channel viewsers (Smokybanjo & Puca) who came all the way from Ireland to join in on the fun.

We don't care what that groundhog said last week, Spring is soooo on the way.

We are deeply saddened that LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. LeRoi had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program.

PRESENTING the FUTURE

Posted in Nokia with tags Nokia, Dave Stewart, Tero Ojanpero, Mick Jagger, My Damn Channel on 7/3/2008 5:04:09 AM by Rob Barnett

Respect and thanks to Dave Stewart for an inviation to an inspired dinner in Los Angeles with Nokia this week.

Dave is a fan of My Damn Channel and a Change Agent. He's a soulful musician and a visionary thinker in search of new ways to put music, entertainment, and ideas into your control.

Dave hosted dinner along with his latest partner in magic, Tero Ojanpera, Nokia's Executive Vice President of Entertainment and Communities.

Less than 30 Nokia dinner guests included musicians, producers, filmmakers, and smart humans dedicated to further empowering people to access information and entertainment through impressive technology.

Mick Jagger was there. I've been lucky enough to work with him and the Stones on a few projects since "Tattoo You." We spoke before dinner and I gave him the My Damn Channel shebang.

Here's Q&A with Dave & Tero on where this is all going.

Dave is on tour this summer as Dave Stewart and His 30-piece Rock Fabulous Orchestra. This man makes mincemeat of the mundane. He's also releasing a new album and a book. Info here.

More to follow.
