You Have a (Ball) Point...

Hot on the heels of last week's National Donut Day, today marks yet another charmingly inane "holiday" celebrating yet another piece of contemporary bric-a-brac.  I'm talking, or course, about National Ball Point Pen Day!  So fire up your out-of-office reply function, put on your party shirt, and cut out of work early.  You don't want to be late for the parade, and besides, those Bic-themed cocktails down at the National Ball Point Pen Day barbeque aren't gonna drink themselves. Just be safe out there.  You know how drivers are on BPP Day.

And in the spirit of the season, we're giving away some free My Damn Channel promotional pens over on our Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook.  Nothing to scoff at, especially since it's been well-established that pen > sword = mightier.  Click the links for a chance to win.  What's that you say?  How DARE you insinuate that this is all just a cheap ploy to unload the huge surplus of pens we ordered to give away at our 4th birthday party on Monday.  Who cares that there are boxes full of My Damn Channel pens piled floor-to-ceiling in our offices, creating a fire hazard that will likely kill us all.  That's no reason to read anything duplicitous into this whole free pen giveaway thing.  You guys are acting crazy.

So happy holidays.  Don't forget to send your mom a card.

Howard Stern Interviews My Damn Channel's Rob Barnett - 420

Posted with tags Howard Stern, Rob Barnett, My Damn Channel, 420, Jon Stewart, South Park on 4/20/2010 7:04:13 AM by Rob Barnett

I just left Howard Stern's studio after an hour-long, on-air interview with the King.

About 2 weeks ago, Collette McLafferty set up an interview on Dr. Blogstein's Radio Happy Hour on Blog Talk Radio. Their interview was supposed to be about My Damn Channel, but they opened with a question about my old life in a thankless job at CBS Radio working to try to figure out how to replace the irreplaceable Howard Stern.

Howard 100 News ran with the story on Sirius on April Fool's Day. Gary Dell'Abate connected to invite me to come in to meet Howard this morning, 420, to tell the untold, true story.

I'd gotten advice from some of my best friends - and from some of Howard's friends about how to handle the situation. Much of it obvious. Tell the truth. Don't weasal. And the hardest advice - don't be long-winded.

Somehow, the minute I walked in LIVE - the mass nerves disappeared and Howard was totally amazing for over an hour.

We talked about the impossible situation he created by quitting radio in 2004 for satellite. I told him that the only person that came out perfectly smelling like a rose...was Howard.

We talked about Jon Stewart, Matt & Trey from South Park, Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David, Chris Rock, David Lee Roth, Adam Carolla, Jimmy Kimmel, Free FM, Harry Shearer, You Suck at Photoshop, and My Damn Channel. He couldn't have been cooler.

Today's show will loop all day on Sirius.

FREE COUNTRY, FREE MUSIC

Happy 4th!

The method to our madness at My Damn Channel has always been simple. We put independent artists we love & trust in charge of their own channels to bring you free comedy & music.

Don Was conjured up mighty free magic with the release of "Stand by Me," a new version of the Ben E. King classic - made for the people of Iran - by Iranian superstar Andy, Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, John Shanks, Don Was & friends.

"Stand by Me" is only one week old today and we're closing in on the first million views worldwide! THANK YOU for sharing this song and video and free mp3 and for moving it across continents and into Iran.

Here's the first, in-depth interview with Don about how this all came about by Nicole Sandler.  (giving me trouble on IE - fine on Safari?! - must need more beer)

Nicole has one of the most impressive careers in radio. She's broadcast on some of the best music radio stations across the country. A true music fan with fine taste. You can find Nicole talking music, politics and more on Air America and we also recommend her blog at RadioOrNot.com.

Nicole spoke with Don Was about putting together the "Stand by Me" project - about Was (Not Was) - and about creating, producing and curating the Wasmopolitan Cavalcade of Recorded Music here on My Damn Channel.

OUT IN CALIFORNIA

Posted with tags My Damn Channel, You Suck at Photoshop, Wainy Days on 7/1/2008 7:23:44 AM by Rob Barnett

Like millions of other humans, the pull of the west effect is mighty. The feeling starts in the chest. The head starts to spin. Ideas begin to bake. Aspiration. Inspiration. Resuscitation.

Half of our tiny staff is here in LA. Most of our artists are here right now.

My Damn Channel will be ONE this July 31.

We're about to close the first phase of DAMN and open up our second year stronger, smarter, better.

We never wanted to call the launch our 'beta.' That always sounds like an excuse when you see sites debut with an apology that they might suck less soon.

Our first year may end with over 30 million views. We've made over 250 original videos. We created 9 original video channels. 22 original series. Over 100 artists from music and comedy, from film and television.

Everyone is free from the typical red tape and molasses that grinds creative work down from lofty goals to the evil valley of compromise.

You get original videos the way the artists intended for you to see their work.

Our site's navigation organizes everything nto separate channel pages by artist. We're not thinking you have the time to search through thousands of little video boxes to find something good.

When we're in 'season' - our artists WORK every week. Regular episodes roll out like in the ole days o' teleeevision.

The ALL NEW version of YOU SUCK AT PHOTOSHOP is being seen once every 2 seconds on da verld vide web. If you missed yesterday's premiere of the brand new WAINY DAYS, then stop reading this drivel and hit this.

There's less than 10 of us on payroll here. We're putting everything we can into making more of all this for you. Everytime you get one more person here to see My Damn Channel - the numbers build to a point where we continue to make enough coin to do MORE.

We've just signed a new major syndication deal to put our videos out to millions more.

We've just signed one of my favorite talents of all-time to create a brand new summer series. We'll put the news out soon after the holiday.

THANK YOU for putting your eyes here and helping build a better way to get you good shit. Keep us honest. Get in our face if we stray.

"Climb in - it's a town full a losers and we're pulling outta here to win."

"IF 6 WAS 9"

Welcome back to "The Night Feed." The twins are heading into their 6th month. My Damn Channel enters number 9.

This blog started like the 'thrill of the chase' - too awake to sleep - all of the daily noise turned all the way down except for the babies crying. But when they settle back down, the search begins to try to document a series of searches and chases.

All 3 babies stand to represent and honor 'original.' There aren't any rules on a page to set it right. The only way to stay 'new' is to listen and watch and steer the way the wind is whispering.

On the channels, we don't impose rules and regulations on the artists. We built the vehicle and keep finding enough cash to fill their tank. No backseat driving.

We're opening up new ideas for channel 9 and ready to listen to yours.

Thank you for the video Erica.

THURSDAYS (NOT THURSDAYS)

(Averitt/Barnett/Was)

You can tell by the title I'm just not getting enough 07/08 sleep. Pathetic. But heading to 'church' tonight for kickoff of the next leg of the Springsteen tour. That & today's 2 new videos will keep me vertical. Every Thursday Don Was presents NEW music recorded & produced for you free of charge. Grab the MP3's & steal the music videos with thanks to a generous grant from our friends at LINCOLN. Today's new music premiere is just what the doctor ordered - reggae rock from the band COMMON SENSE. Their first My Damn Channel video is called "STRANGE ONE."

mdc-common-sense.jpg

The band is based in a very important town for our new media mission - LAGUNA BEACH, CA. It's homebase for Okapi Ventures where Marc Averitt is a lead backer & board member at My Damn Channel. Surf's most definitely UP.

If comedy's your Thursday calling - head to one of newest channels: CARNIVAL of STUFF. Steve Kerper & the mighty men at Asterisk present our first animated series: "INVASION" - episode 3 - SQUIRRELS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN:

MY DAMN CHANNEL GAINS GRAVITAS?

Posted in My Damn Channel, Writers Strike on 11/30/2007 8:23:00 AM by Rob Barnett

Old media may be starting to fall in love with the bad boys. They've definitely gotten all hot and bothered. Ever since the strike began, the collective power created by fans of video sites like this are captivating editors to get to the bottom of our business models and find out how and why major Hollywood talent is setting up a new rebel base here in dot-commie land.

I landed in LA late yesterday and learned that a conversation I had with Gary Gentile at the Associated Press about the writers' strike was picked up by over 100 media outlets including Yahoo!, MSN, MSNBC, ABC, Forbes, CBS News, and the Washington Post.

Our recent viral videos racked up millions of views in a matter of days. Advertisers like Lincoln/Mercury and Universal Pictures just bought a ticket on the My Damn Channel bus and this little anti-media machine is picking up speed.

If artists don't win more respect and revenues inside this strike zone, then old media is going to wind up looking like Bruce Willis at the end of "The Sixth Sense."

Here's Gary's piece.
