Meet the NYU filmmakers who created the Subway Fresh Artists Series "Double Crossed:"



Forest Conner (MBA/MFA)

Forest Conner graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2006 with a dual-degree in Computer Science and Psychology, specializing in Arti?cial Intelligence Research. Since graduation, Forest has worked in the fast-paced world of software development in Silicon

Valley for the networking giant Cisco Systems, Inc. while spending his free time entering short ?lm competitions in the San Francisco Bay Area and fostering his love for ?lm production. It was from this experience that he decided to enter the graduate program at NYU.

Through the dual-degree program, he strives to understand the business of ?lm, with the ambition of becoming an independent ?lm producer. With the world-class professors and the access to some of the nation's greatest ?lmmaking talent, he believes that the opportunities are limitless.

Forest was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina.




John Ryan Johnson (MFA)

John Ryan Johnson is an independent filmmaker based in New York City. His diverse production experience as a writer, producer, director, and cinematographer covers both narrative and documentary film, commercials, music videos and television in the U.S. and abroad.

Ryan's latest commercial, "Celebrate Responsibly", won the Esquire/Ciroc Ultra Premium Cut Contest and aired on Bravo! on New Year's Eve 2012.

Ryan's NBA spec commercial, "Nine to Five" was selected to the 2012 SHOOT Online New Director's Showcase and was named a finalist in both the 2012 AICP Awards and the 2012 Porsche International Student Advertising Film Awards.

Ryan is currently finishing his NYU Graduate Thesis film, โ€œAnatomy of an American Dreamโ€.




Zachary Kerschberg (MFA)

Zachary Kerschberg is an award winning narrative and documentary ?lmmaker. He holds an Honors B.A. in Romance Languages and Literatures from UC Berkeley and an M.F.A. in Dramatic Writing from NYU. He was a Fulbright fellow to Dubai in 2008 and is currently completing a second M.F.A. in Directing at NYU.

Episode 1: Jack Nolan, private eye and black marketeer, sticks his neck out for no one, until an old flame walks back into his life.

Episode 2: Jack Nolan crosses the city to find Angela Winters and unravel the mysterious gift cards, but discovers more than he bargained for.

Episode 3: Double crossed by the woman he once loved, Jack Nolan risks everything to end prohibition and restore freedom of choice.

Meet the team behind the SUBWAYยฎ Fresh Artists Series "Bite Night":

Magee Clegg, Director
Magee Clegg is a Director/Producer pursuing an MFA at The USC School of CinematicArts. He began his career as a filmmaker when he traveled to India to direct a documentary about rural to urban migration titled A Box with a View. Shortly after India, Magee became a Fulbright Scholar in the Philippines where he spent one year directing Filipino Rice Policy, a documentary which explores the corrupt politics surrounding rice importation in the Philippines. While living in Manila Magee also directed music videos for Filipino rock groups as well as an HIV Awareness PSA that aired nationally on MTV ASIA. Magee has screened his work in India, Philippines,Macau, and at many festivals throughout the United States including the academy awards, qualifying Chicago International Children's Film Festival. He loves to tell stories about coming of age, family, and young love. Magee is currently developing his first narrative feature film, which follows a man from the US on a journey to Philippines to meet his father for the first time. Magee is honored to be a Subway Fresh Artist and looks forward to directing more branded content in the future.

Jenny Koreny, Producer
Jenny Koreny has been on the forefront of producing digital media and web content since2006. Before starting the Cinema Production MFA program at USC, Koreny produced and edited video & multimedia content for Tower Records, consulted on the development of start-up social networks, and worked as a freelance graphic designer. During her time at USC she interned for Warner Brother's Marketing Department on the campaigns for Argo, Gangster Squad, The Campaign, and The Great Gatsby. At the Sundance Institute she was one of two interns who worked for the Sundance Documentary Fund, the team of eight screens over 700 films and reviews proposal submissions from documentarians around the world. She is currently interning for the producers of the Emmy award-winning TV show Mad Men. She is currently developing a feature documentary that follows the experiences of female entrepreneurs and VC's, and is developing an application called "Flixie," a start up venture that helps users find content across streaming services.

John Berardo, Writer/Producer
A native of Norman, Oklahoma. John ventured to California to begin his career as a director after winning a 2005 student Emmy for technical achievement. Before starting the Cinema Production MFA program at USC, John received a BA from UCLA in Theatre directing and playwriting with a minor in Film, Television, and Digital Media. At UCLA he directed such plays as A Streetcar Named Desire and Arthur Millerโ€™s controversial After the Fall. This summer John directed his thesis film, The Furies of War, which is to debut spring of 2013. During his time at USC, John has directed, written, and produced numerous short films and commercials for CBS, Disney,Vimeo, and MTV. He recently wrapped short films (Glass People) for David Hoberman and the Anxiety and Depression Association of America and (Strings) produced by James Franco. John is currently developing a feature based on a short horror film he directed (Dembanger) which has received film festival success and won first prize Vimeoโ€™s Cabin in the Woods Short Horror Festival.

Subway Fresh Artist Filmmaker Series

Hey, we've got three new shows coming at you from the Subway Fresh Artist Filmmaker Series! Meet the first of our student filmmakers! They're three teams of students from USC. Please learn a little about them and meet all of the people who helped make their series come to life!





Bite Night:

Magee Clegg Bio

Josh Eiserike Bio
Josh Eiserike is a writer/cartoonist living in Los Angeles. He has written for the hit HUB animated series โ€œG.I. Joe: Renegadesโ€ and MAD Magazine. His feature script โ€œBooty Seekers,โ€ a teen comedy set in pirate times was named a 2012 quarter finalist in the Nicholl Fellowship, sponsored by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. He is currently finishing his MFA in film production from the University of Southern California with an emphasis in writing and producing.

Joshโ€™s first comic book โ€œClass of โ€˜99โ€ won an Ignatz Award (the Independent Spirit Award of the comic book world). Aintitcoolnews.com called his subsequent comic, amen-behaving-badly comedy titled โ€œAssholes,โ€ โ€œA damn funny book.โ€ His first graphic novel โ€œAnyone But Virginia,โ€ about a superhero who returns home to plan her high school reunion (and reconnect with friends and family), is currently distributed by Alterna Comics. Josh has also produced and written various short films, includingโ€œVolcano Girl,โ€ based on โ€œAnyone But Virginia.โ€ He also produced USC thesis film"The Films of Avi Krum," starring Adam Herschman ("Accepted") and Dan Rather("CBS Evening News").
Prior to moving to Los Angeles, Josh worked as a reporter in the Washington, D.C. area for the Washington City Paper, The Examiner and the News and Messenger. Josh covered everything from Congress to rock music to video arcades to comic books. His reporting and editorial cartoons received awards from various press associations and the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists. He has also completed internships at Marvel Comics in New York and, in Los Angeles, at the management production company Aligned Entertainment and at Robert Zemeckis' production company ImageMovers.

Christian Contreras Bio
Christian Contreras is the director and co-writer of the Subway Fresh Artists web series, โ€œHerman.โ€

Christian is originally from El Paso, TX where his love for cinema was cultivated by the rich Mexican culture of a border town community. He holds a BA in Electronic Media with a minor in Theatre Arts from the University of Texas at El Paso. In 2008, Christian won the national โ€˜Kennedy Center ACTF Barbizon Award for Excellence in Lighting Designโ€™ for his work in his schoolโ€™s production of Jose Riveraโ€™s โ€œCloud Tectonics.โ€

Shortly after, Christian moved to Los Angeles, CA to pursue his passion for film and lighting. He is currently finishing his MFA in Film and TV Production from USCโ€™s School of Cinematic Arts where he focused his studies in cinematography and discovered his love for writing and directing.

Coming off his experience on โ€œHerman,โ€ Christian is revisiting his craze for puppets in his graduate thesis film, โ€œPara Ellos,โ€ a story about two children who journey across the U.S./Mexico border in search for their father; he is co-directing โ€œPara Ellosโ€ along with โ€œHermanโ€ producer, Victoria De La Torre. Christian hopes to continue making films that focus on the stories and experiences of the Mexican-American culture while pursuing a career in family entertainment.

Victoria De La Torre Bio
Victoria De La Torre is a producer and co-writer of the SUBWAY Fresh Artists web-series โ€˜HERMANโ€™. This California native is a current MFA candidate at the USC School of Cinematic Arts Production Program. She received her BA in Communications fromCalifornia State University of San Bernardino where she had the opportunity of interning at Robert Greenwald Productions.

During her time at USC she has been a twice recipient of the Rodolfo Montes Memorial Scholarship and was also awarded the John Huston Directing Scholarship (2010-2011) for her USC film titled โ€˜THE DAY BEFOREโ€™. Although Victoria aspires to write and direct she had the great fortune to discover a love for Production Design. Over the course of her USC studies she has designed and set decorated over 20 projects; including in- class exercises, music videos, advanced shorts and thesis films.

One of her best experiences by far is working on the โ€˜HERMANโ€™ SUBWAY web-series alongside her classmates and friends.

Victoria is most inspired by her family and culture and is currently working on her thesis film with โ€˜HERMANโ€™ director and co-writer Christian Contreras. She loves everything about the production process.

Annabel W. Seymour Bio
Annabel was born and raised in New York City, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 2009. She spent most of her time at Dartmouth performing with the improv comedy troupe, โ€œThe Dog Day Playersโ€, and studying French poetry for her thesis in Comparative Literature. Annabel returned to New York after college to work at BreakThru Films, where she worked for Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg on their documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. In 2010, Annabel moved to Los Angeles to pursue her MFA in Film Production at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where she has co-produced a short documentary called Bingo Night, wrote and produced a graduate thesis, The Furies of War, and wrote a comedy feature about flight attendants, entitled Layover. While at USC, she has also worked as an intern the Montecito Picture Company (Up in the Air, I Love You Man, Old School) and as a set PA on the Rob Reiner film, The Magic of Belle Isle. She currently works as a development intern at Broadway Video (SNL, 30 Rock, Portlandia), and as a PA on several web shorts for Broadway Videoโ€™s digital venture, Above Average. She will be graduating from USC in May of 2013, and hopes to pursue a career in comedy writing and development.

Patricia Pham Bio
Patricia is the youngest daughter of Vietnamese immigrants who somehow managed tosettle in Southwest Missouri. She grew up in libraries and beauty salons, fascinated withthe ideas of truth, illusion, and identity, concepts that continue to inspire her creativework today. Throughout her childhood to present-day, Patricia has remained active invarious areas of performance and storytelling including theater, dance, music,photography, journalism, and independent filmmaking. She earned her B.A. in MassCommunication from Missouri Southern State University, where, as a producer, director,and writer, she received multiple media and journalism awards at state and nationallevels. Some of her many interests include pop culture, technology, criminology, andphotographing everything she eats. She is currently pursuing her MFA in FilmProduction at the University of Southern California where she has produced a variety ofwork including dramatic and comedic shorts, documentaries, and animated films. Shehopes to continue producing work that makes you say, "Whoa."

Conor Fetting-Smith - Director / Writer - Thoroughly Melted Minnie
Conor is a graduate student at USCโ€™s School of Cinematic Arts specializing in writing, directing and producing. His films have screened at Lincoln Center, Outfest, The Boston International Film Festival, and the United Nations Film Festival, among others. Heโ€™s the recipient of the USC Lambda Alumni Association Scholarship in Cinematic Arts, and an advanced student at The Groundlings Theater, where he performs sketch comedy and improv. Prior to USC, Conor began his film career at Miramax Films and IFP in New York City. Heโ€™s a graduate ofthe University of Pennsylvania and a native of Baltimore, Maryland. Conor will receive his MFA from USC in May 2013. Heโ€™s currently at work on his first feature screenplay Teach, and set to direct a web series this Spring called Butch & Belly Take the Rap about two gay best friends determined to become famous rap stars.

Yesterday's news was so sad. Thinking about the price some pay for fame and the toll that takes on the souls of our entertainers.

I just got the news that an amazing friend and fan of this community died late yesterday.

Peter Kuhn was one of the most soulful, loving and fun friends I know. Always there to support and cheer us - in spite of whatever hard times he faced.

He wrote fan letters regularly for our videos. This last volley of emails about WAINY DAYS was so good and funny that I sent them to David Wain and David (a mensch like Peter) responded immediately - asking me to tell him: "I love your friend's POV!"

Here's an exerpt from Peter's emails this week:

He wrote notes about "....Mr. Wain's extraordinary ability to get so many talented, beautiful women to make out with him on a regular basis regardless of the fact that it virtually always ends in disaster. At this point in my life I would be willing to trade a great deal for that kind of weekly scenario.

In stark contrast, and historically, Woody Allen has had to woo, hire, date, marry and then divorce his women taking many years and much cash to do so. Wain does it in 5-8 minutes every week, amazing!"

I cried like a baby when I got news of Peter's death this morning. First thoughts were for how sorry I am for the 4 ladies he leaves behind. Their loss is too sad to know. I'm crying for the fact that Peter's friends all don't get to love him back here as much as he loved us.

Then I turned back to thoughts of how fast, immediate and final his last seconds must have been - doing what he loved - body surfing on LBI - surrounded by friends who love him in my family - catching waves one minute -then without warning .... drowned and not revivable a minute later.

Peter went out in style as the answer to "who would be third?" - the same day as Farrah and the King of Pop. I absolutely KNOW he loves this badge of honor bestowed upon him.

I think he's telling us all a lesson learned right now - I imagine he's saying that all the hardship and all the bullshit we all experience - and sadly sometimes create - is meaningless. All that means anything is love and friendship and family and doing as best as we can to work and contribute - and especially this....to make as much fun as we can while we're here.

I'm praying for his family for our pal Peter.

The rock star hopes to shock Amazon with a new web-based recommendation service.

(Fortune) -- There's a reason Peter Gabriel is a household name. One of the founders of the super-group Genesis, the British rock star went on to have great success as a solo artist known for his outlandish costumes, his cutting edge music videos, and of course, his '80s hits like "Sledgehammer" and "Shock The Monkey," which were both artistic and commercial milestones.

What's less known is that the 58-year-old Gabriel has done rather well since then as a digital media entrepreneur. In 2000, he co-founded OD2, which quickly became the leading European digital music provider with clients like Nokia and MSN. OD2's owners reportedly later sold the company for an estimated $20 million.

Okay, so Sammy Hagar reportedly sold a majority stake in his tequila business for four times that amount last year. But now Gabriel has a new business that's potentially much bigger. On Tuesday, he and a new group of partners launch the private-beta version of a web-based service called The Filter that will sort through the vast inventory of content on the Internet and recommend songs, movies, television show and web videos to its users. In May, The Filter website will be open to the public.

Ultimately, Gabriel and his partners in his Bath, England-based company have a grander vision for the Filter than telling you that if you like Sammy Hager, you might also like Van Halen's earlier stuff with David Lee Roth. They hope you'll one day be able to log in and find the perfect place to dine on your upcoming trip to, say, Barcelona -- and a suggestion for the right clothes to wear on your night out. Now that sounds like something an art rocker like Peter Gabriel would go for --- as opposed to a night of tequila swilling at Hagar's nightclub in Mexico.

Gabriel put up $8.5 million along with England's Eden Ventures to start The Filter because he fears that people are being overwhelmed by the web. "Everyone got really excited about the concept of infinite choice through the Internet," he says. "The reality is a little like getting a sore thumb with your remote on your television. Too much choice is not always a good thing."

He describes the solution to this machine-age dilemma in the sort of terms you might expect from a thinking man's rock star. "My friend [recording studio guru to Talking Heads, U2 and Coldplay] Brian Eno has been going on for some time about the increasingly important role of the curator over the creator," Gabriel explains. "In many ways, the disc jockey has become as important as the musician, which is one of the best illustrations of that. I would like a life jockey as well as a disc jockey."

The Filter's founders say their service could play that role nicely, claiming its recommendation engine is more sophisticated than anything else on the market. Unlike competing services, the Filter doesn't rely on the ratings that people assign to songs or movies online. It determines its users tastes by observing what they actually do with these items on the Internet.

The engine is particularly interested if someone buys a song, streams it or clicks on a related link. "We like to get real evidence of people's tastes," says Martin Hopkins, co-founder of The Filter and creator of its recommendation technology.

Hopkins also notes that The Filter's engine doesn't push people choices based on what they bought years ago. It slowly forgets what it learned because peoples' tastes change. Don't you wish Amazon's (AMZN, Fortune 500) service did the same?

Gabriel and his partners hope to generate revenue at The Filter by selling advertising. They also hope to license their technology to other digital media companies. The company already provides recommendations to the users of its former OD2 customers like MSN (MSFT, Fortune 500) and Nokia (NOK). That's why the service launches with a database of over 50 million transactions from which to make suggestions.

It's a long leap from recommending music to choosing their restaurants in foreign cities. Still, the idea is intriguing. Gabriel isn't just taking about this either. He's putting up a lot of money to make it happen. "This is definitely something that's worth watching," says Gartner analyst Mike McGuire who, like Fortune, was briefed by The Filter before the private beta launch.

As you might expect, Gabriel is in the studio working on new music, too. He owes one more album to EMI. After that, he plans to release his music on his own a la Radiohead. The graying rocker is thrilled that the Internet is giving artists a new means of distributing their music -- especially the ones who couldn't get a record deal even in the industry's better days. "I like it that the inmates are running the asylum,' says Gabriel.

March 2, 2008 -- Web entertainment enters prime time, as Internet networks start modeling themselves on real-world broadcastersBY THE TIME you finish reading this sentence, a 15-year-old mall-punk in central Michigan will have clicked on a YouTube video, gotten bored within seconds, and then clicked on another. It's that kind of insatiable thirst for the next bright, shiny Web-thing that's both fueling and challenging an emerging wave of Internet TV networks.



But for these rapidly multiplying entertainment sites that present original videos, usually released on a consistent schedule, it's also their greatest hope. Because although the audience that looks online for entertainment is fickle to the point of brutality, maybe their attention spans are so short because nobody has given them what they want yet.



Two weeks ago, actor-comedian Damon Wayans became the latest high-profile figure to throw his talent behind the still relatively unproven medium of Internet television, as he announced the impending debut of WayOutTV.com. The site will feature sketch comedy bearing the trademark Wayans Family mix of oddball pop-culture parody and provocative social commentary. Though an official launch date hasn't been established, samples are being released weekly at YouTube.com/WayOutTV.

"There is no urban destination online," Wayans says. "Everybody uses YouTube, but you have to dig deep and for a long time to find something that satisfies you. With WayOut, I'm the filter. I'm creating a brand of comedy as opposed to letting everybody just put up whatever they want."Though the comedian admits that building a Web site's infrastructure is new to him, he sounds like a veteran 'Net-geek when he talks about his big ideas, which include using WayOutTV to create viral ads for corporations, and focusing on content for mobile phones.



He'll need those forward-thinking concepts if WayOutTV is going to succeed.



As the Will Ferrell-backed FunnyorDie.com proved, it takes more than a big name to hold the eyes of an online populace in constant search of novelty. Pulling in about 2 million unique viewers per month, FunnyorDie may be a traffic success compared to other top-notch comedy destinations like SuperDeluxe and MyDamnChannel, but after drawing 4.5 million visitors during its April launch, FoD's numbers crashed and have yet to recover.Besides the fact that the site's videos lacked a predictable TV-like schedule, another reason for FunnyOrDie's somewhat disappointing performance could be its insular nature. The old model was to guard your content vigilantly so that it wouldn't fall into the hands of other video-sharing sites, where you wouldn't benefit from the traffic. This may have been a mistake.



New networks are distributing their content all over the Web rather than confining it to a single site, but they're doing so in a controlled way so artists' rights are protected. 60Frames.com, which launched its first series in January, follows a studio model in which professional artists are given resources to create videos that are syndicated to sites like YouTube and MySpace.



Shows produced by 60Frames include "WhoWhatWearTV," which has been theNo. 1-ranked fashion/beauty video podcast on iTunes since its debut, and the hilarious Jersey Shore-lampooning "Douchebag Beach" series."We knew there were a lot of talented artists who wanted to work in this space, but they didn't want to just upload their content to the 'Net without any support, or sell their ideas to media companies where they would be forced to give up ownership and control," says 60Frames CEO Brent Weinstein, who previously led United Talent Agency's digital media department. "When we hear an idea that's a good match for our company, we get behind it as quickly as we can, and once we're in business with artists, we give them quite a bit of free reign. We're the most artist-friendly option in the marketplace."



Of course, you might consider bypassing artists altogether.

A totally different (and more conventional) model for Internet TV is exemplified by Joost, a five-month-old service that presents more than 20,000 shows plucked from "real" TV networks such as Comedy Central and A&E. Original programming is a potential goal for the future, but Joost's main focus is on acquiring rights to existing programming and presenting it all in one place for free.But are more channels what people want?Though more than 5 million people have downloaded the Joost software to date, the company's North American GM, David Clark, says that the biggest challenge in running Joost is "helping people find what they are interested in.

"All of a sudden, that "filter" thing that Damon Wayans mentioned is starting to make sense. If you're lost in an abyss of options that aren't directly aimed at you, maybe you're in the wrong place. And Rob Barnett, CEO of MyDamnChannel, is even more critical of the repurposing strategy.

"I think there's a lot of cynicism in this attitude of, 'The kids are watching all this YouTube stuff, so let's go make another buck off the s - - - we already have,' " Barnett says. "It's rehashed, retreaded content that was made for a different medium. I'd rather say, 'Hey, let's blow their minds and give them something they haven't seen before.' "

Barnett managed programming and production divisions at MTV and VH1 for more than a decade before launching MyDamnChannel in July of last year. The site had 1 million unique users in January, and when we spoke with him, it was having its biggest traffic day ever thanks to a Harry Shearer-produced clip that showed candid footage of Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilly during moments they didn't know cameras were rolling.

Less is certainly more at MyDamnChannel. Instead of a mass of individual videos that require searching, MDC presents eight highly produced channels, created by artists ranging from Harry Shearer to Coolio, which release a new episode every week. It's about as close to an actual TV network as you'll find on the Web, right down to the consistent scheduling, and it runs proudly against the grain of the user-generated content approach (which ManiaTV.com CEO Peter Hoskins colorfully refers to as "loser-generated content").

Like Wayans, Barnett realizes the importance of submitting to a higher power (i.e., YouTube) for exposure and distribution."If you just drop [your content] onto the Internet, you're in the biggest ocean in the planet, and you're lost," Barnett says.

Words of warning for the glut of new comedy-based Internet TV networks trying to follow the throw-it-all-at-the-wall approach set by FunnyorDie. Recent months have seen the launch of MyBlueCollar.com (Jeff Foxworthy's comedy site), NationalBanana.com (Jerry Zucker's comedy site), and the brand-new Comedy.com (Former UPN President Dean Valentine's comedy site). We don't necessarily recommend you visit any of them.Even though the trend is toward outrageous humor, not every Internet TV network goes for belly laughs. One of the most interesting new models is the development of a group of sites or channels that have nothing to do with one another, but are produced with the same aesthetic.

ONNetworks.com presents more than 20 do-it-yourself cooking, decorating, and green-living instructional shows aimed at the young and hip. The sites launched by the year-old NextNewNetworks.com, which is also led by former cable TV execs, have provided definitive destinations for everyone from vintage Corvette enthusiasts (VetteDog.com), to jewelry designers (MetalChik.com), to people who just like cute pets (UltraKawaii.com).

But there's one thing all these sites have in common: They won't ask you to pay a single dime for your entertainment.

With so much content already free on the Web, those who launch Internet TV networks know they have to be a little more creative when it comes to finding revenue streams. Hence, syndication deals, embedded ads, corporate brands integrated into programming and DVD releases.

Ultimately, Damon Wayans places his trust in the opportunity of the unknown that the online wilderness can be tamed and the pioneers of Web TV can eventually learn how to turn a profit.

"I personally feel that the Internet is what cable was 30 years ago," Wayans says. "It's like clay. Whatever you decide to make it, that's what it will become."

Concept: Boundary-pushing alt-comedy videos and social networking.

Best Show: "The Professor Brothers," wherein two bald, pompous community college lecturers try to make sense of the world.

Concept: An Internet entertainment studio focusing on eight professional-quality channels produced by well-known artists.

Best Show: In "Wainy Days," writer/director/ex-State member David Wain repeatedly and hilariously fails to find his soul mate.
