The Best Part of Halloween?

Think about it. Each Halloween we pulverize pumpkins to stick candles in their hollowed-out gores and put them on our front porch so that people know that we're friendly people with candy.

This ritual also marks the beginning of the most gastronomically wonderful time of year.
How so? Let us count the ways:

Pumpkin Bread

Pumpkin Scones

Pumpkin Soup (Trust us. So good.)

Pumpkin Pie

And of course, America's favorite weird obsession:

The Pumpkin Spice Latte.

We've seen people trample small children to get to this drink. Get it together, people.

If all of these things made you really hungry, but you're still unsure how to get this pumpkin-slaughtering ritual started, here's a little "How-To" from Slacktory:

Happy Halloween!

The Day in Horse News, 2/10/11

Posted with tags horses, unicorns, dolphins, Smashing Pumpkins, D'Arcy on 2/10/2011 10:56:59 AM by D'AnnyMoney

Ah, the age old question: Why do girls love horses, unicorns, and dolphins?  Well, according to Laurel Braitman, an MIT graduate student who was quoted in this NPR article about that very subject, it's because "horses and dolphins and unicorns...are all borderland creatures; gateway animals to other worlds."  Laurel continues, saying, "they help [girls] imagine wonderful other ways of being in the world. They let us be cowgirls and oceanographers and mermaids and princesses."  NPR always posts the most captivating articles!

In other horse news, former Smashing Pumpkins bassist D'Arcy Wretzky was arrested for failing to pay fines and appear in court after she was ticketed for letting her horses run amok throughout her town.  I wonder if people would have minded if instead of horses D'Arcy had released unicorns.  A bunch of unicorns running around sounds kinda awesome, don't you think?  Especially if the unicorns are galloping to "Tonight, Tonight".  Just imagine how damned majestic that would be.

And that's the day in horse news.  Tune in for Manatee news next week!

A SWEDISH LESSON

With the big premieres of Spärhusen and Easy to Assemble season 2 quickly approaching, we started thinking about the lovely nation of Sweden and all the wonderful things it has brought us.  We're assuming you guys may not know everything (or maybe anything) about the country squished somewhere between Finland and Norway.  So, here are a few educational facts about this Scandinavian gem!

-
-Sweden is called "The land of the midnight sun" or "The land of the Vikings".  We’re thinking is should be called "The Land of Apples and Fish" or "The Land of Ikea"…but that’s just us.

--The Swedish alphabet has 3 more letters than the English alphabet; they are å, ä and ö.  We're wondering how this changes the ABC song...

--
One of Sweden’s most famous exports is the family friendly Volvo driven by soccer moms all over America.  The soccer-mom in Sweden is known as the  latte-mama. This is due to the Swedes’ obsession with coffee as they consistently rank in the top 5 for countries with the highest coffee consumption per year.  A coffee break is known as a “fika”.  “Fika” can be used as either a verb or a noun (i.e. “let's have a fika” or “shall we fika?”).     This is similar to the English word “dance” or “shit” (i.e. “this is shit” or “I need to shit”).

--
Legendary actresses Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman are both from The Land of Apples and Fish! Actor Gunnar Björnstrand, also hails from Sweden (not really sure who he is but he’s got an awesome name so therefore we included him).

--
In the 1970’s, the Swedish band ABBA gained worldwide popularity.  According to the always truthful and trustworthy Wikipedia.com, “Sweden is the third largest music exporter in the world, with over 800 million dollars in 2007 revenue, surpassed only by the US and the UK”.  Obviously, with the highly anticipated release of Spärhusen’s “The Best of Sparhusen” these numbers are likely to increase.

--
Finally, in Sweden dates are written Date/Month/Year unlike in America where we insist on being different from the rest of the world and writing    Month/Date/Year.  Therefore to avoid any confusion Spärhusen and Easy to Assemble Season 2 will be debuting on My Damn Channel on 8/10/2009 for the Swedes and 10/8/2009 for the Americans.

KEY INGREDIENTS

Posted in My Damn Channel on 12/11/2007 8:47:00 AM by Rob Barnett

The twins are starting to sleep more than four hours at a time. Sleep deprivation has been morphing into rocket fuel for thinking, creating, blogging for the past 7 weeks. Will more than four hours cause writer's block? This morning I awoke about 5 am - missed the middle if the night feed - gifted by my wife - but just had one of those all too rare moments - twice - once after feeding my son - and again just now after feeding my daughter. These moments shut out all the noise. The chase was off. The race wasn't being run. Time out was called - and the silence took over - rolling in like a wave. When these moments passed - I felt like I was fed well too. A meal laced with the same unnameable flavors that birthed the babies, the business, and all good times. I remembered the energy we conjured up to start My Damn Channel and the secret sauce that went into the brew. The key ingredients we left out were doubt and fear. We left those two in the kitchen cabinet - just in case anyone from old media needed to stop by and borrow some spice. We cooked with extra servings of badass and positive thinking - we threw in enough angst to keep us from ever going through the motions - because we know that breaking out of our low-rent kitchen and into profits was a mission worth fighting for. We're a little more than four months into the battle. We're not claiming "mission accomplished" yet. We're seeking new co-cons to add ideas, weapons, soul, sweat and cash. We're answering every phone call and email - even some of the oddest ones - 08 is upon us - and we're building a bigger boat to set sail for futureville. Co-cons welcome: rob@mydamnchannel.com
