YORK – March 7, 2014 – The USC School of Cinematic Arts, Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, and the SUBWAY® restaurant chain today announced the continuation of a historic corporate-academic-creative partnership and competition connecting students at two of the nation’s top universities with one of the leading global brands in the quick serve restaurant category. The 2014 SUBWAY FRESH ARTISTS™ FILMMAKERS program – through which student filmmakers create branded entertainment featuring the “Every Sandwich Tells a Story” theme –features participation from USC for the fourth consecutive year, with the Newhouse School joining for the first time.
This program was developed and executed by Content & Co, the Los Angeles-based brand studio that creates innovative, cross-platform engagement opportunities for SUBWAY® Restaurants. My Damn Channel is hosting and syndicating the three original web series created during the competition alongside past winners, premiering this week at MyDamnChannel.com/Subway and YouTube.com/Subway. Winning selections will be screened at an event hosted by My Damn Channel at SXSW on March 10th beginning at 5pm at the Greatest Common Factory creative space, 2000 E. 6th St in Austin, TX.
The SUBWAY® brand introduced the SUBWAY FRESH ARTISTS™ FILMMAKERS program to students at USC in Fall 2010, with a brand brief that challenged students to develop a creative treatment for scripted episodic web series, judged by a panel of representatives from SUBWAY®, Content & Co, and USC faculty and alumni. Based on their creativity, brand personality, and strategic fit to the creative brief, panelists selected semi-finalists who were asked to present their concepts in-person. In 2014, the Newhouse School was also invited to participate in the SUBWAY FRESH ARTISTS™ FILMMAKERS program with entries that yielded the first non-fiction winner of the program.
The 2014 winning series from USC are Miss Mustard Glade and Fairy Tales, and the winning series from the Newhouse School is the documentary series Fresh Starts. The USC films are available now online and the Syracuse film will premiere following SXSW. In addition to hosting and syndicating the series on the My Damn Channel Comedy network, My Damn Channel will produce original content related to the SUBWAY FRESH ARTISTS™ FILMMAKERS initiative, including behind the scenes extras, filmmaker interviews, and coverage of the showcase event at SXSW.
As part of the syndication platform for SUBWAY FRESH ARTISTS™, the brand plays a major role in distribution of content by featuring it on the Official SUBWAY® Facebook page (facebook.com/subway), Twitter (@Subway) and other social media platforms that reach more than 27 million fans in aggregate.
SUBWAY FRESH ARTISTS™ FILMMAKERS talent have also gone on to win other accolades. “Frat House Musical: The Series” was recognized at the 34th Annual College Television Awards.
