So I walk into one of my favorite places in all of New York City recently - Film Forum - to catch Tokyo Story, a masterpiece from 1953 directed by Yasujiro Ozu. The movie was excellent, one of the best I have ever seen, but that's not the point of my story. The point is I watched the movie with Jonathan Ames sitting right there in front of me. Now, I am a big Ames fan, having read one of his novels and loved his HBO series Bored To Death, so the fact that he was taking in the same movie as I was felt pretty cool. I nodded at him. He gave a slight nod back. Two dudes just living their lives in New York City, soaking in the culture.
Anyways, I told that story because he just came out with a pretty cool video with Above Average, where he tells a funny story involving boxing and a hotel room. Check it out! Jonathan Ames is a really fascinating dude; any chance I can to get inside his head, I take. And hey, maybe I'll tell my Jonathan-Ames-Tokyo-Story-Film-Forum-story some day on the internet!
Oh wait, I just did.
