Everybody's talking about the new Miley Cyrus video; or about the probably fake video of this dude not recognizing his wife after surgery; or the definitely fake uber prank by Jimmy Kimmel and the stunt twerker. But not enough people are talking about Leland, the five year old kid rapping his heart out to Kanye West's "Blood On the Leaves," the Nina Simone sampling standout track on Ye's newest album Yeezus.
Yeezus is my favorite record of the year, so I have to give this kid props from the get-go, simply because he is choosing great material to cover. Good ears, kid! But also, not only is the choice excellent, he does the track justice. He spits it lean and raw. He gets it. He may be five, but even at that young age, Leland gets heartbreak. He just gets it! If all of the muckety-mucks at the big-time music labels know where their bread is buttered, they'll sign Leland to a contract toot sweet.
And to top this cute ice cream subdae of a video with a nice fat cherry, note how the kid doesn't say any of the curse words. The best moment might just be around the 2:47 mark. Cute, funny, gentlemanly, and electric.
